Fluffy, Peeping, Houseguests…the Daily Farm Adventures {48} — 6 Comments

  1. I’m so sorry about your first shipment. We purchased an incubator and hatch our own but we don’t have a mix of breeds, just buff orpingtons. It is a Hovabator that we got from our farm supply store.

    • I love our Buffs! We’ve had some questions about the hatchery we’ve been using the last two years, but I do really like that they offer a great selection and I love having a “rainbow” flock with all their different looks and behaviors. I haven’t felt up to taking on an incubator yet, have you been successful? We’re going to try and hatch some of ours this year with our own hens–if that goes well, that might be a plan for the future as well.

    • The family loves having the little ones here, but I’ll be glad when they grow up and are not so fragile. The first couple weeks are always a bit stressful to me. I adore our grown chickens though. Could sit for hours and just watch them meander through the yard…

  2. How sad that your first order went so awry. 🙁 Great customer service though, and I’m glad that the replacements are doing so well. I plan to get meat chicks later this year but am fortunate enough to have a small hatchery nearby, so I will be picking them up. Thank you for sharing this at the HomeAcre Hop; I hope you’ll join us again this Thursday.

    • Oh, I WISH we had somewhere we could pick up locally. We have some folks that sell locally, but their breeds are very limited and I love having a “rainbow” flock of all different breeds and personalities. We’re always bringing in someone “new” to see how they do in our environment, since we don’t run a breeding flock of our own.
