The Freebie Chick
It’s been awhile (in chicken years) since you’ve seen our little peeps.
Remember these guys?
Well, they’ve grown.
A lot.

They're in that chicken-adolescence stage that's sort of awkward and prickly and not very attractive. The Cowboy thinks these speckled Partridge Rocks look like hawks.
We have some Buff Orpingtons, some New Hampshire Reds (similar to Rhode Island Reds, but not the same), those Black Australorps I was so excited about, and a couple Partridge Rocks, which are also completely new to us.
And a “free rare exotic chick.”
That would be this one…
We have no idea what “it” is–I’m just hoping it’s a hen. I don’t need any more roosters right now. Regardless of what the kids think about it.
Everyone seems to be growing just fine. The temp is turning chilly and rainy this week, but we’re hoping to be moving them out of the brooder house and into a field pen to finish growing soon.
These are all layers for our chicken house. We picked breeds that mature early–so we hope to be getting eggs by the end of the summer. We also picked heavier breeds so that they produce a nice body for the dinner table when their egg-laying days are over.

Of course, there's always that golden beauty that never seemed to suffer from the same acne and clumsiness as the rest of the middle school world...
And the Partridge Rocks also have a good reputation for being broody and being good mothers so that if for some reason (blue eyes) I ever (and dimples) decided to consider possibly getting a rooster again…
I’m curious to see what our little “rare exotic” turns out to be. Who knew you could get “freebie” chickens?
LOVE the chickies 🙂 They are adorable!
Egg-layers are so much more fun than broilers! They have little personalities and idiosyncrasies and you can tell them all apart…
Wow – that is one odd looking chicken 🙂 LOL!!
I have a sinking feeling that it’s a rooster…
My Black Australorps were pretty awkward looking for a while too. Actually, they took the longest to feather out. I’ll be interested to find out what breed the exotic is.
It’s bigger than all the others, and actually kinda pretty. I laugh when they get to this stage–new feather and baby feathers sticking out all over everywhere. 🙂
