Needing Two Hands

We were out and about the farm this weekend moving along toward Spring. I keep getting so hopeful with the flowers starting to poke out and lambs showing up, but then we get a misty rain and cold fog and I remember that it’s only February. Early February.

This is also a tough time for me to get pictures because we’re usually all-hand-on-deck for what’s going on. Like this weekend…

mud 3Mr. Fix-It hooked our wagon cart to the mower and attached the Ladybug’s “pedal” (a block of wood that slips over the real pedal) so that we could move some hay that wasn’t getting eaten from the cow field to the chicken house for bedding.

I snapped a quick picture with my phone–then immediately had to head over to help because she got stuck.

Really stuck.

mud 1Like, by the end of it Mr. Fix-It had to get her out with the tractor stuck. (And my clothes looked just like that wagon, by the end of it–which is one reason why I didn’t have our good camera with me!)

And I’ve written before about how voracious the ewes can get at feeding time. Normally it takes both my hands and a helper to work the gate to make sure I don’t get eaten! {grin}

mud 6But, as usual, I feel like we got quite a lot done. I was really hoping for a few more lambs, but we seem to have hit a break. Everyone is growing, but no one new has shown up in a few days. We’re still waiting on 11 ewes to deliver and our gray cow, Annabelle, is expecting too.

mud 4We’re moving right along with the garden as well. We got two new raised beds built (I needed both my hands and my feet to help with that one! Our yard is not exactly level.) and picked up lettuce, broccoli, and carrot seeds to start in the house. (We’ve never had much luck with carrots–so pray that this is the year!) We’re having such a mild winter it’s going to be hard to wait until March to put things in the ground!

mud 2Mr. Fix-It has been working some compost in already, but he’s much more patient than I am.

He’s also devised a…”thing” (like my technical terms?) to raise and lower a grill and spit over our fire pit. We’ve been using the fire pit for cooking since our gas grill went kaput last summer and we may never get another one again.

How was your weekend?
