Possums on the Porch…and Other Daily Adventures
What does farm life look like around here this week?
It looks like hissing egg-suckers that couldn’t resist a grease-coated t-bone. This ugly critter may or may not have also been responsible for one or two of my recent chicken loses. I hate losing hens–it makes me mad and sad all at the same time. But I really hate seeing the poor Ladybug’s face turn red when she tries not to cry over one of her beloved birds. I’m beginning to think that being a “favorite” is a curse around here! Every time someone has a favorite, that one is sure to be the next headless pile of feathers.
The kiddos thought the whole opossum on the porch situation was pretty cool though. I had to print a picture for the Cowboy to take to show his classmates though, because some of them apparently didn’t believe him.
I’ve taken to making Penny sleep outside every few days, hoping she might prowl around at the right time and scare anything trying to cut through to the chicken house field off. All she really does is bark all night and then come inside and sleep the whole next day.
After the recent nighttime snake adventure, we’ve seen several other snakes around lately too. They pop out and slither off while you’re mowing. The boys think it’s awesome. (Especially the Cowboy!) I think it’s creepy–not because they scare me or anything! It’s just…creepy!
The weather is trying to decide if it wants to still be summer or skip on into Fall. I’m all for Fall–but summer is lingering on in the 250,000% humidity. But there’s been some amazing sunrises–which I get to see every morning now with the start of school and shortening days.
And now it’s hurricane season as well. The seasons turn and there’s always something to deal with as you go along.
And of course, it’s soccer season. We’ll be out at our first games this weekend. All 3 of the kiddos are playing on separate teams this season and all 3 are playing at 9:00 am on Saturday morning. Wish me luck! Thankfully the fields are close together and this is the only week of the season quite like this. But I’ll be making tracks all morning!
What does life look like around your homeplace this week?
BTW, if your life is crazy-busy like ours right now, you should check out the Well-Planned-Day sale going on over at HEDUA. I love this line of planners and they’re 30% off for just a few days! These planners are about organizing your whole family–not just yourself or your workday. There’s a place for everything! (pss…I’m an affiliate because I love their stuff and their company. If you have any questions about that, visit DISCLOSURE, or email me.)
That possum really isn’t very pretty, is she? I know all God’s creatures have a purpose, but favorite chicken killers just can’t be tolerated! Glad you got her!
We pay our boy 50 cents for every gopher or animal he traps around our place. I think I’d go up to a dollar for possums. We had a muskrat the other day try to invade our place (OK, it was in the stairwell) and I got it. My boy immediately asked since he was with me if he got the 50 cents for it.
Ew. I don’t like possums or snakes. I know we’ve had them around here but fortunately I’ve not had to deal with them too much. Thank you for sharing this with us at the HomeAcre Hop. Hope you’ll join us again tomorrow. 🙂
Good catch! The opossum freaks me out a little, but then again, I did have a close call with a skunk last night. Trade-offs…Thanks for posting to Dude, Sustainable! Green Living Thursdays!
Glad you caught the possum! That is a scary looking beast. I don’t think we have any in our area but we’ve got a family of skunks under our porch. They haven’t been a problem yet but we are on the lookout.
