Normally on Mondays and Fridays I give farm updates, but the holidays threw me off a little bit, blogging-wise. Here’s a bit of an update, with some of my favorite family pictures from our time off!
Last week Mr. Fix-It had Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday off as well so we did get some farm work done too. The weather was a little strange–warm till Wednesday, then winter-coat cold on Thursday. We got rain, then it stopped, and then it rained again. But we adjusted. {smile}
The Cowboy spent about 20 minutes rounding up the stubborn ducks when we had a short storm blow up.One of our big winter goals for the farm this winter is to clean out our “equipment row” along the back field edge. It’s another example of farm “junk”–which is not really junk at all! It’s where we keep things like wood and tin siding scraps for future projects; hay feeders, hoses, cages, carriers, and crates that we aren’t using right now; our trailers; tractor implements that we don’t use regularly; miscellaneous pallets (in various states of deterioration!); extra fencing supplies that we don’t need yet…that kind of bigger stuff that we don’t have room for in the garage–since Mr. Fix-It actually works on our vehicles and equipment in the garage! {smile}
There’s just so much…stuff…that comes with homesteading and farming! Especially if you’re trying to be thrifty and like to keep useful stuff around for future projects. Where do you put it while you don’t need it?
Anyway, we’re cleaning up back there while the weeds have all died down and we don’t have to worry about snakes. We heaped up a big burn pile of tree and bush trimmings and “not worth keeping anymore” scraps and had a little afternoon bonfire one day. I snapped some fun family pictures while we were out there.
Penny was so excited to be out with everyone after the rain that she was acting like a clown!We also pulled out a lot of scrap metal we’ll be taking to recycle and Mr. Fix-It mowed all the weeds and winter grass down to straighten up.
There’s also some miscellaneous trash over by the kiddos fort that we’re going to be cleaning up in the next couple weeks if the weather is decent. (That stuff really is more like “trash” or “junk” and I don’t know where it all came from.) We want to do some vine and scrub trimming around the field edges as well.
This is all stuff that is much easier to do in the winter while everything has died back. We’re lucky that winter around here is usually pretty mild. We can get a lot done–if you ignore the cold rain. The crew even spent a good part of their Christmas break in short sleeves!
Each of the children have started taking Penny for a walk on days we are home. They each do “2 laps around the big field” with her. It’s about 1.5 miles for each of them and about 4-5 miles for her.A friend was recently talking to me about ordering spring garden seeds. Oh my! I was overwhelmed just thinking about it! (She was excited!) We’re certainly not there yet. But it was really enjoyable to take a few walks with Mr. Fix-It over the holiday and start doing a little planning…a little goal setting…a little dreaming…for the new year.
Do you have any dreams that are so big right now that they don’t have a time frame? That’s ok–leave it on the list anyway. If you keep crossing off the small stuff, eventually you’ll get to a place you can take a closer look at it! {Psss….ours looks kinda like this.}
