Forest Sunrise and Taking Deep Breaths…the Daily Farm Adventures

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 14, 2015 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020 2

Sometimes walking the dogs at 5 or 6 o’clock in the morning lets you see some wonderful moments. Like the the way the sunrise lights through the foggy woods like a forest fire. And it lets you do a lot of thinking. Like about the school year starting soon and how awful the beginning was last year…and how you survived it. And it got better. And getting to the other side of it might have redeemed that heartache a little. Now we know we can do it. We’re ready to … Continue Reading…

Dirt, Dogs, and Raising Warriors…the Daily Farm Adventures {91}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on October 30, 2015 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

Ok, ok, I’m a terrible blogger. I just get wrapped up in living life sometimes and forget to go and write about it! {smile} I miss writing, but not so much that I’d give up the moments I had out in the real world instead of at the computer. Then I’ll have some crazy moment that takes me back to a post I remember writing (like this one) and I go hunt it up, read it, and think, “hmm, I should get back to writing–I have things to say!” So … Continue Reading…

How to Plan a Family Unit Study for Fun Summer Learning

Walking in High Cotton Posted on April 26, 2017 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020 2
FREE Summer Unit Study Planner set at Walking in High Cotton (2017)

A book, a movie, and a field trip about the same topic equal an easy summer family unit study!  Summer brain drain–ugh! For 3 months the kids run around from camp to craft to sleepover wanting fun and games and play time all day, every day because SCHOOL’S OUT so we don’t have to do any more of “that learning stuff.” Um…not around here! So what’s a busy, working mom to do besides frantically shuffle the kids from one STEM camp to another and continue to spend her nights tracking … Continue Reading…

Spring Break with Simple and Frugal Family Fun

Walking in High Cotton Posted on April 14, 2017 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

The crew has been on Spring Break lately, so I’ve been hashing together a schedule between work and home to spend time with them–even if it occasionally means I’m working while they’re playing. It’s a joy to be able to hear them laughing (and squealing!) in the background! What are some of the simple and frugal (actually, mostly FREE) family fun we’ve been enjoying this week? Well, scrubbing water troughs for one! The kiddos had to empty, scrub and refill all the water troughs. Since we just recently rotated the … Continue Reading…

Being Unplugged for the Holiday

Walking in High Cotton Posted on December 2, 2015 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

I was pretty unplugged for the Thanksgiving Holiday this year. Only sent a few Happy Turkey Day texts and liked a few lovely family pictures on Facebook and pretty much put the phone down and enjoyed some time with the family. It was a nice break. Our kiddos didn’t have much screen time either and I only had one or two requests for “tablet time”–which I answered with a NO. We watched a miserable football game on Thursday night (sigh) and did a little shopping on Friday, but none of … Continue Reading…

Life with Coal the Cattle Dog

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 22, 2015 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

If you follow us on Facebook or Instagram, you probably see a lot of pictures of my new sidekick, Coal. Our Christmas puppy is growing up fast! He’s 8, going on 9 months old now. He got neutered a few weeks ago, recovered fine, and spends a lot of time out and around town with me. People are always very curious about him, because the breed is not that common (although it’s becoming more so!). For some reason I get asked a lot if he’s a “mini German Shepherd.” Honestly, … Continue Reading…

Summer is Winding Down…

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 19, 2015 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

I know everyone is in back-to-school mode. We don’t go back until the day after Labor Day, so we’re fighting that a little bit. We did get all our school supply shopping done (except for earbuds, I didn’t find earbuds on sale anywhere) and I’m starting to stock up on lunch supplies and snacks for the first few weeks. But otherwise, we are not going into full-school-prep yet. To underline that, our kiddos have been packing up and heading out on “adventures” every day with the dogs. No explanation of … Continue Reading…

Those Boys…the Daily Farm Adventures {95}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on November 25, 2015 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

On Monday I posted about our boys (especially that youngest one!) pretty much never taking anything seriously. Or if they do, it’s for like 5 minutes. Thus I give you one of my sons IN a water-er. I have no explanation for this. Actually, after they got into a wrestling match trying to push each other down a dirt hill while playing catch… And then took after each other with stick swords in the cow field… I was pretty much ignoring anything that didn’t involve loss of limbs. Which meant … Continue Reading…

New Babies, New Jammies, New Year…the Daily Farm Adventures {96}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on January 4, 2016 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

As you may have seen on Facebook, we started off our Christmas holiday with a new calf on Christmas Eve morning! The Cowboy found him out there with his Momma while doing the morning chores. Molly is such a good momma that she’s never needed any help–and always has boys! Good for the freezer, but I wish she’d throw a heifer because we’d definitely keep her. Her calves also always start out such a lovely fawn brown, but eventually turn gray like our bull Chester. We spent the rest of … Continue Reading…

School Pictures from Home…And a Quick Weekend Update…the Daily Farm Adventures {97}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on January 11, 2016 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

I’ll be the first to admit that I’m no photographer. I have a wonderful camera (thanks to my wonderful Mr. Fix-It!) and I’m learning a lot just from experience–but it’s on my to-do list to actually sit through some classes (even online) and tutorials. I want to do better. And here’s one reason why…As the Momma, I have the opportunity to catch the best moments! The moments full of their quirks, their laughs, their attitudes, the essences of them. And every picture I get that I love, I know could be … Continue Reading…

The Shotgun Rider…the Daily Farm Adventures {83}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on May 27, 2015 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

This past weekend I found myself alone. Mr. Fix-It and the crew were away for the weekend and it was just me and the dogs. This is not the first time recently that I’ve found myself with time to myself on my hands–without me having to force the seconds apart by sheer willpower and squeeze in. These moments are part of the reason I convinced (begged, cajoled, harassed, debated, forced…name your adjective) Mr. Fix-It that we should bring Coal into the family. Penny is a farm dog and family dog (and she’s … Continue Reading…

Everyone Looks Good…the Daily Farm Adventures {57}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 21, 2014 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020 2

We were off adventuring in North Carolina the last few days, for Mr. Fix-It’s sister’s wedding. Homesteading and vacations rarely mix. It’s too much responsibility to ask just anyone to come by and manage things while we’re gone. There’s a lot more to keep track of than just watering the plants and bringing in the mail. {smile} But if we are going to go anywhere, the height of Summer is the best time. Winter is quadruple the work, with feedings twice a day (different amounts for everyone!) and frozen water … Continue Reading…

Sailboats, Birthdays, and Blue Chairs..the Daily Farm Adventures {63}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 18, 2014 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020 2

Usually the Daily Farm Adventures are filled with…well…farm adventures. {smile} But this weekend our days were filled with sailboats and shopping for the Ladybug’s birthday. She turns 10 today, ya know. And she celebrated in grand style by winning the church’s first Sailboat Regatta! The kiddos and Mr. Fix-It have been working on their first sailboats for a week now. They sanded, and sanded, and sanded, and sanded some more, and then painted. This was the first time they used spray paint. There were a few runs, but mostly on … Continue Reading…

Thoughts of the End of Summer…the Daily Farm Adventures {62}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 15, 2014 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

I came across this quote on Pinterest the other day and just loved it… I’m still struggling a little with keeping my camera in hand this year. But I find that my eye is still…trained?…prepped?…to see things that I would have missed before. I find that this farm life has shown me to appreciate things I wouldn’t have thought to like before. To see with new eyes. To be inspired by things I would have completely passed by. Like buzzards… I always associated them with death before, and that is … Continue Reading…

When Things Change…the Daily Farm Adventures {55}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 11, 2014 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020 5

The Ladybug has been off at camp this week and it’s been just us and the boys. It’s made for an interesting change in the household dynamic, to say the least. {smile} We all miss her, but Speedracer really misses her. Monday evening the boys and I rounded up and penned the sheep. Then a red pick up truck rolled into the driveway with a stock rack on the back. They loaded up a couple sheep and a couple chickens and drove away. I may have cried. Just a little. … Continue Reading…
