Well, It’s Been Raining…the Daily Farm Adventures {86}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on June 5, 2015 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020 2

That’s about all I can say. It was terribly dry and God has now sent us FOUR DAYS of rain. I’ve given up on the keeping the floors clean! But I found a few pictures to share with you from just before the clouds rolled in… Liberty the “barn cat” that lives on our front porch, shamelessly begging for some kitchen scraps… Henny Penny, our rascally free-ranger, also shamelessly begging for a treat on the front porch… And Molly, with her calf Bubba (he’s got a noticeable under-bite and as … Continue Reading…

Canadian Visitors…the Daily Farm Adventures {64}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 12, 2014 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020 3
We have a new bird of prey moving into the neighborhood and I'm a little nervous. I think he's eyeing my chickens! {www.walkinginhighcotton.net} #naturestudy #owls #homestead

We have some new visitors in the neighborhood. A flock of Canadian geese has taken up residence in our big front field every morning for the last two weeks or so. I’m a little frustrated that most of my pictures are either far away or of them moving away. They don’t get “scared” when we’re around, they just turn and mosey off across the field and all I get are pictures of their tails. It sounds very Fall-ish as they honk on their fly-overs. As usual, everyone else on the farm … Continue Reading…

What’s In A Name?

Walking in High Cotton Posted on November 14, 2011 by Jamie OliverNovember 14, 2011 4

We call him Felix. Or “Fee-Wicks” which ever you prefer. He also answered to “Here, Kitty, Kitty” now. We think he might have wandered up from the bridge, but he’s clearly bonded to our two barn cats, Liberty and Piper. The Ladybug’s been on a mission to win him over. So far he naps on the porch now, comes when she calls them for dinner, and the kids have been able to pet him a handful of times. We haven’t been able to trap him to take him to the … Continue Reading…

The Lost and the Found

Walking in High Cotton Posted on October 25, 2011 by Jamie OliverOctober 25, 2011 3

My daughter is a magnet for lost, furry four-foots. She feeds the outside cats once a day and she’s only gotten to pet him/her twice so far, but you can see her stalking him slowly, quietly, every evening when she goes out with the feed bowl. Winning him over. Coaxing him in. I’m sure she’ll be the first one to pick him/her up. Like Piper, I think this one just wandered over from somewhere nearby. He/she just showed up one day looking about 3-4 months old and very, very skittish.  … Continue Reading…

Springtime Bustle

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 29, 2011 by Jamie OliverOctober 13, 2011 10

I don’t have much time to write, but didn’t want to leave you hanging! Things are moving right along around here. We got the call at 5:45 am the other day. From the Post Office. We rushed out the door 45 minutes early… …To collect our much anticipated box! These will be new layers for the coop. Hello ladies! (At least, you better be ladies!) And we’re busy trying to catch up from 2 years of wool back stock before we shear yet again next month. We’re way beyond the … Continue Reading…

Darn…I mean, BARN Cats

Walking in High Cotton Posted on April 29, 2011 by Jamie OliverApril 29, 2011 12

Remember a few weeks ago I mentioned that our completely wild, only-comes-for-food, never been touch by a human tom cat had kittens? Well, she had taken up residence in Mr. Fix-It’s garage. First in the storage loft (until Mr. Fix-It had to stage a crying-kitten rescue) and then under the work bench. Until the kids found her. About two weeks later, after being pestered to death every evening after school, she moved the little brood into the hay shed. Which of course, didn’t work at all either. (The Ladybug is … Continue Reading…

The Call of the Wild

Walking in High Cotton Posted on November 1, 2010 by Jamie OliverOctober 26, 2010 2

So, Mr. Fix-It and I were trying to watch TV the other night and kept hearing a baby crying. Now, we’ve heard lots of babies crying over the last few years.  Baby humans, baby sheep (which sound disturbingly like baby humans), baby cows, baby chickens… …Honestly, after about 9 pm I’ve learned to tune it out unless it’s unquestionably human or it’s March (which means it’s lambing season).  But it just went on and on…so finally we turned off the TV and got out the flashlight. Low and behold… We … Continue Reading…

Lunchtime Fiascos

Walking in High Cotton Posted on October 22, 2010 by Jamie OliverOctober 21, 2010 2

I have decided that I’m never going home at lunchtime to check on things and grab a quick bite to eat ever again.  Never. Ever. Again. Why, you ask? Because I don’t want to know. At lunch time I’m in office clothes.  At lunch time I’m hungry, and crabby, and tired, and ready for a break.  At lunch time I’m alone. Except for cats… …Who have been well trained by our previous resident rooster to be terrified of chickens. And a horse… …Who is still mad because I called her … Continue Reading…

Curious Passenger

Walking in High Cotton Posted on October 18, 2010 by Jamie OliverOctober 18, 2010 1

I ran home for lunch the other day and made the mistake of leaving Hemi’s windows down.  And Hemi had a couple curious visitors while I was eating. Once they were startled they couldn’t quite figure out which way they came in and which way to go out.  Of course, the Hemi is an extended cab so it has lots of windows, and I think they’re used to sneaking into the GMC after Mr. Fix-It gets home from work and finding some leftover hot-dog or chili cheese fries from 7-11. … Continue Reading…

With Boots On

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 13, 2010 by Jamie OliverSeptember 12, 2010 3

Boots are an integral part of everything we do around here…work, play, even bedtime.  I mean, we need a mudroom just to keep the boots in! So I’ve got big news in our little boot world… But before we get to the details, let’s talk boot nomenclature for the High Cotton crew. These are cow boots… Not cowboy boots.  Just cow boots.  Cow-kickin’ boots, actually, but that’s a bit much for little mouths.  Also called muck boots, in some parts.  Easy to slip on, easy to slip off.  Waterproof.  Taller … Continue Reading…
