A Day Together on the Eastern Shore

Walking in High Cotton Posted on May 31, 2016 by JamieMarch 18, 2017 2

Our family and home life has been pretty stressful lately. Just a lot of responsibilities…and a lot of duct tape and wire nuts. Turns out when you buy a brand new house–with all brand new appliances–eventually they’re all not brand new anymore. It also turns out that the lifespan of most major appliances is about the same. Which means all our brand new appliances from when we moved in are now all on their last leg. All. Of. Them. Bless his heart, poor Mr. Fix-It is resuscitating our HVAC on a … Continue Reading…

Building, Rebuilding, and Getting Dirty…the Daily Farm Adventures {109}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 21, 2016 by JamieMarch 30, 2020

Thank goodness after a long round of antibiotics and other meds Mr. Fix-It and I are feeling better. Not great. Not quite back to normal. But definitely better. Because Spring is in full swing around here and there’s just no time to be laying around in bed! The Dodge has been in pieces in the garage for weeks now and that situation had to be corrected. First we had to take it apart to figure out what was broken. Then we had to find and order the parts–from Montana of … Continue Reading…

College Football…in the Rain

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 29, 2015 by JamieMarch 9, 2017

This past weekend we packed up the kiddos…and a change of clothes…and my Father-in-Law…and headed down to North Carolina to watch our Hokies play my Sister-in-Law’s Pirates. Mr. Fix-It and I are both Tech Alumni (his Dad too!), but life hasn’t involved much time or energy for college football in the early years of the farm and family. But my SIL is a dedicated fan for her team and has been trying to get us to one of the games, since we play each other now, for the last couple … Continue Reading…

We Had a Birthday!

Walking in High Cotton Posted on June 19, 2015 by JamieMarch 9, 2017

Mr. Fix-It doesn’t get off work very often. It’s the nature of working for a family-owned small business. The benefits are not the same as what I take for granted. He doesn’t have much paid leave, and what he does have, he tries to save for holidays or traveling to see family. So when I decided to take the first couple days of summer break off with the kiddos earlier this week, I was tickled that he up and decided to schedule a day off to spend with us. And … Continue Reading…

Just Let Them Play

Walking in High Cotton Posted on June 3, 2015 by JamieMarch 9, 2017 1
Just let them play...it's good for them! (via Walking in High Cotton)

This past weekend the kiddos did their chores and were finally allowed out of the house to “go play!”  (Ah, the drama of an hour of chores and cleaning on Saturday morning!) At one point, as they trooped back for some snacks, I snapped a few pictures. Besides those moments (which ended up a little blurry because I’m out of practice) my mind snapped back to something from a few years ago… Same 3 kiddos. Same gate. Same yard. Same woods they were playing in back in 2012. And then … Continue Reading…

Sailboats, Birthdays, and Blue Chairs..the Daily Farm Adventures {63}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 18, 2014 by JamieMarch 30, 2020 2

Usually the Daily Farm Adventures are filled with…well…farm adventures. {smile} But this weekend our days were filled with sailboats and shopping for the Ladybug’s birthday. She turns 10 today, ya know. And she celebrated in grand style by winning the church’s first Sailboat Regatta! The kiddos and Mr. Fix-It have been working on their first sailboats for a week now. They sanded, and sanded, and sanded, and sanded some more, and then painted. This was the first time they used spray paint. There were a few runs, but mostly on … Continue Reading…

Run While the Sun Shines…the Daily Farm Adventures {44}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on April 7, 2014 by JamieSeptember 8, 2019 2

This weekend it was sunny and 70 degrees and we were on the go all weekend. We woke up well before the alarm clock on Saturday to a cow bellowing in the driveway. There’s no fencing in the driveway, so there should not be cows in the driveway. Ha! Turns out he was the least of our troubles. He was bellowing for the rest of our little family herd–who were across the street grazing in the neighbors front yard. The good news is that right now the animals are used to … Continue Reading…

Skylanders Birthday Party

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 11, 2014 by JamieJuly 13, 2017 2
Simple, Homemade, and #Frugal #Skylanders Birthday Part @ www.walkinginhighcotton.net

I’m taking a break from our Lambing Help series and sharing about Speedracer’s recent Skylanders birthday party. This whole party was an interesting quandary for me because our kiddos don’t play video games. At. All. We don’t have a Wii or a Playstation or an Atari or whatever. {grin} The closest they get is occasionally playing Wonder Zoo on the tablet. Our kiddos know Skylanders from colorful comic books and their friends at school. We bought them some of the toys at Christmas because I got a great Cyber Monday deal on … Continue Reading…

Fuel for the Finish…the Daily Farm Adventures {39}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on February 24, 2014 by JamieSeptember 8, 2019 2

Are you familiar with the Auto-B-Good series? They’re these fun DVD shows for children that are kind of Veggie Tales meets Cars. We found them at a local Christian bookstore and the crew really enjoyed them a few years ago. (Definitely a good buy!) This post reminded me of one of those shows a little bit. {smile} The weather was gorgeous this weekend, other than all the wet and mud from the storms we got on Friday. {sigh} We were a little limited on what farm work could be done because … Continue Reading…

Presenting…Family Movie Night!

Walking in High Cotton Posted on December 6, 2013 by JamieMarch 31, 2017 3
How we make weekly Family Movie Night work for our busy family of 5. {@www.walkinginhighcotton.net}

I LOVE Family Movie Night. We all do. It’s the perfect, leave the work/school-week behind and transition to the weekend-at-home ritual for us. There’s tons of ideas for these awesome themed family movies nights on Pinterest now. I have a whole Family Movie Night board because some of them are so cool I want to try them too. But we do Family Movie Night every Friday, so ours looks a little different most of the time. It started out as me wanting one night a week where no one complained about what … Continue Reading…

Are you a super-savvy, coupon clipping, smart phone app, pre-planning, list making, bargain hunter? Then this post is probably not for you. You probably know way more tips and money-saving strategies than I do! {smile} Are you a busy momma that tries to make smart choices and spend your money wisely, but just can’t fathom how all these ladies manage to bring home $600 worth of groceries for 28 cents or get their entire Christmas list at 92% off? This post might be a help to you. Pocahontas, Printers, and Painting Lambs

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 30, 2013 by JamieSeptember 30, 2013

“Wingapo!” That means “Hello!” in Powhatan. According to Disney. Honestly, they may or may not be right since it’s an extinct language and no one knows. And I’ll take it after tying my tongue in knots over “Werowocomoco” and “Opechancanough” and “Tsenacommacah” all weekend. We wrapped up the kiddos American Heritage speeches on Sunday evening–just in time to discover a “printhead malfunction” with our printer. Hmm…most likely related to the Lego incident of 2012 and that unidentified loose rattling sound inside any time you move it. In the mean time, … Continue Reading…

Possums on the Porch…and Other Daily Adventures

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 6, 2013 by JamieSeptember 8, 2019 5
Possum trap for catching an egg eater.

What does farm life look like around here this week? It looks like hissing egg-suckers that couldn’t resist a grease-coated t-bone. This ugly critter may or may not have also been responsible for one or two of my recent chicken loses. I hate losing hens–it makes me mad and sad all at the same time. But I really hate seeing the poor Ladybug’s face turn red when she tries not to cry over one of her beloved birds. I’m beginning to think that being a “favorite” is a curse around … Continue Reading…

10 Things Our Boys Need to Know

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 29, 2013 by JamieApril 30, 2017 4
Wear Boots, Throw Some Dirt on It, Get in There---10 Things Our Boys Need to Know ... via Walking in High Cotton

I’m not a boy, but I’m raising these boys every day and I’ve realized that there’s a lot of things about boyhood I don’t understand. Just like there’s a lot of things about manhood that I don’t understand. And it turns out that these things I don’t really understand are usually better taught by their father, grandfather, uncles, and other men in their lives. It also turns out they are often taught simply by example, without any words at all (which is certainly not my way of teaching things!) But … Continue Reading…

Pine Car Derby Fun

Walking in High Cotton Posted on April 9, 2013 by JamieApril 9, 2013

Our family is so blessed, just over and over, by the hard work of our church’s children’s program workers. On Saturday the crew got to participate in the first (hopefully of many!) pine car derby with their Wednesday night Master’s Club group. I posted pictures of them working on their cars over on Facebook earlier in the week. Saturday was Derby Day! I have to admit, it’s a hard balance to strike as a parent–you want your kids to have a healthy, competitive spirit and a drive to do well. … Continue Reading…
