10 Little Daily Routines for the School Year

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 11, 2012 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 4
10 Little Routines for the New School Year @ www.walkinginhighcotton.net

I have to admit, I love daily routines. I’m not a detail person, so having a solid routine keeps me from being stuck dealing with details all the time and leaves me to think big thoughts and make big plans and dream big dreams. {In contrast, Mr. Fix-It takes “fly by the seat of your pants” and “taking the scenic route” to new and undiscovered heights!} This year’s school change has been really big for our household. Really big. It’s completely changed up our household routine and made it much … Continue Reading…

Getting Our Craft On

Walking in High Cotton Posted on November 30, 2011 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 2

Since we were together for 4 days, I suppose it’s only natural that my sister and I would break out our scissors and glue and get our craft on. Saturday night after eating and shopping and sleeping and shopping and cleaning and drinking lots of coffee…we spent a few hours ripping and tearing and gluing and glittering and waxing philosophical about all the things of faith and God that we’ve been learning over the last year or two. I didn’t really expect to stay up until 4:30 am–especially with only … Continue Reading…

It Still Hurts…Grieving and Growing

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 7, 2014 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 8
It Still Hurts...Grieving and Growing @ Walking in High Cotton

I’ve been writing a lot about the farm and lambing lately. And then I took a few days off because we had snow and I was busy keeping up with the kiddos and catching up on work from days out of the office. I don’t talk about it very much, but I do work full-time outside the home and trying to be all there when I am home, means the paperwork can really pile up when I’m off for a few days. So when I sat down to write a … Continue Reading…

In Which God Shows Me a Tiny Glimpse…

Walking in High Cotton Posted on May 6, 2014 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 5
In which God shows me a tiny glimpse...at Walking in High Cotton

I had the next post about summer learning plans all planned out…in my head…and ready to be typed up last night. Football practice was even cancelled by the rain, so I had extra time to get the kiddos in bed on time! Then the homework war commenced with the Ladybug. Tears, tantrums, torn papers, broken pencils…40 minutes into a 20 minute assignment she walks up to me and says, “I need to talk to you about something in your bedroom.” Um…ok. How about we talk about it here, in the … Continue Reading…

It Just Takes Time…the Daily Farm Adventures {51}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on May 5, 2014 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 1
It just takes time...the daily farm adventures at Walking in High Cotton

It’s been a bit of a hectic weekend, but only in good ways! {smile} Sort of. If you follow us on Facebook, you might have seen that I saw a coyote trotting across the field next to our place the other afternoon. I thought my eyes were deceiving me at first (since it was black!) but I whipped out my camera and tried to snap a few shots and they’re definitely good enough to confirm for me. Although, you really can’t mistake that wild-dog trot. He stopped and looked right … Continue Reading…

More Than Happy…the Daily Farm Adventures {53}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on June 2, 2014 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 2

I think we might just erase the word “happy” from our vocabulary around here. There is biblical happiness in scripture, but our common vernacular has turned the word into something else entirely. Socially we’ve elevated the word into a philosophy of life. We want happiness. We crave happiness. We chase happiness. We’re trying to find our happiness. We reject things simply because they do not bring happiness–including marriages, loved ones, careers, and fiscal responsibility. Culturally, we are pursing happiness right off the side of a cliff! If you search Pinterest, … Continue Reading…

There Is a Price…the Daily Farm Adventures {54}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on June 6, 2014 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 1

I can’t seem to get back everyday words after everything that’s happened the last couple weeks. After losing Grandma Koeller, and facing some lingering demons of my own, the end-of-the-school-year fervor and fuss (K5 graduations, spring concerts, field trips, sports tournaments, etc.) and then the transition to summer fun…it’s all just left me…tired. I have heavy thoughts and words that go with them, but little to offer about book lists or baking projects or summer picnics and popsicles. I find myself sitting in the truck in the driveway…looking over the fields … Continue Reading…

Thankful Thursday…On Grief and Coping and Digging Deep

Walking in High Cotton Posted on November 7, 2013 by Jamie OliverNovember 13, 2018 1

  Today would have been my Dad’s 55th birthday.  Sometimes it gets very hard to be thankful always in the past tense. My heart hurts so much it’s hard to breath and reality starts to get a little mixed up. I start remembering great things from the past and suddenly I find myself looking forward to the future…then there’s this horrible, wrenching shock when I have to remind my heart and mind that that will not be the future. There will be a future–but that won’t ever be part of … Continue Reading…

Camping and Hiking at Tallulah Gorge State Park, Georgia

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 10, 2018 by Jamie OliverSeptember 9, 2018 3
Camping and Hiking at Tallulah Gorge George...we came, we saw, we walked 1,099 steps--it was beautiful! You should do it! via Walking in High Cotton

Camping and hiking as a family is something we do a lot of–but not normally in a formal public campground. On our Spring Break Road Trip it was a brand new experience for our crew to “camp” with access to an electrical outlet and a hose! I don’t think we even used the electricity at any of our campsites. We didn’t even think about it being there. (What? Not even to charge your phones for all those great family pictures? Nope–invest in an external charger. You’ll never have to worry about … Continue Reading…

How to Redeem Family Time Gone Wrong

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 6, 2018 by Jamie OliverSeptember 5, 2018
Toddler meltdowns, car break downs, weather disasters...How can you redeem the time when you've made big plans and family time goes wrong? Use these tips! via Walking in High Cotton

Have you ever sat down and planned out a great family fun day, where to go, what to eat, activities to do or attractions to see–maybe even already bought the tickets!–And then it rains? Or someone gets hurt right before you leave? Or the car breaks down? Or the toddler has a meltdown? (Or in our case, the teenager…and how did we get here?!)  And suddenly your great family day is ruined, right?  Nope. It doesn’t have to be.  I can’t name the times we’ve had family plans and something … Continue Reading…

10 Road Trip Car Activities for the Whole Family

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 28, 2018 by Jamie OliverMarch 26, 2018
10 great activities for the whole family to enjoy TOGETHER in the car! via Walking in High Cotton

At the beginning of our series of Road Trip posts, I mentioned that we are really looking forward to a fun, relaxed, vacation-feel to our travels. So most of our planning focused on two points… #1. Fun, simple activities while we’re IN the car! #2. Not being IN the car the whole time! I already shared about the individual road trip travel activity cases that we made each kiddo for some of our car time. But in our family, we have a couple of reluctant readers, who just also happen … Continue Reading…

Road Trips to Nowhere Just for Family Fun

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 16, 2018 by Jamie OliverMarch 26, 2018 2

So, in just a week or two we’re loading the crew up in the truck and heading out on a 3,000-mile journey to nowhere. Sound crazy? Which part? The 3 kids in a truck for 3,000 miles in 8 days, or the journey to nowhere? {smile} We’re excited. It’s been a long time since we took a family vacation. Ok, we pretty much never have. We travel to visit family and call it a vacation. We go to parties, family reunions, the beach, all that family stuff–which we totally love, … Continue Reading…

Family Road Trip Travel Activity Cases for Kids

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 20, 2018 by Jamie OliverMarch 20, 2018
Road Trip Travel Activity Case for Kids via Walking in High Cotton. Simple, thrifty, fun for family road trips

So…we’ll be spending the week of Spring Break traveling in the truck…with the kiddos…for 3,000 miles…YEAH! We actually ARE really excited about our family road trip vacation–in case that first sentence came across sorta sarcastic. I wrote it like that on purpose, though, because a lot of folks really do react like that to the idea of 10 days of travel, in a car, with 3 kids, basically going nowhere. But we’ve put a lot of thought into making this a fun adventure since we came up with the idea … Continue Reading…

What to Do When Chores are Hard

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 24, 2016 by Jamie OliverJuly 10, 2017 2
How to handle it when chores are HARD. Be calm, be consistent, be available. {from Walking in High Cotton}

From the time our crew were old enough to be in a backpack carrier, there have been chores around here. By the time they could walk, they were helping drag empty buckets back to the feed shed, putting up fencing, and scrubbing water buckets. So we talk about doing chores a lot here, and you’ll find a lot of pictures of chores and chore time (or choring as we call it when we’re making up our own verbs) on our Facebook and Instagram accounts. And folks are often impressed by how much … Continue Reading…

In Which I Am Just a Tired Momma in New Shoes

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 26, 2013 by Jamie OliverJune 23, 2017 1
When you're tired and weary and trying to be a new Christian, sometimes you have to learn to rest. via Walking in High Cotton

Normally I like to post a farm update on Fridays, even if it’s just pictures from my phone from the week. But here’s what real life looks like sometimes–this week I just don’t have anything. I am tired, world-weary, and trying to find rest. This week I am just a momma with a sink full of dirty dishes and 7-inch tall grass to come home to tonight. I’ve got a house full of kiddos that need baths and a pasture of sheep that need to be wormed and some sassy … Continue Reading…
