How to Organize Family Electronics for Easier Travel

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 25, 2018 by JamieSeptember 29, 2021
How to Organize Family Electronics for Easier Travel via Walking in High Cotton

I was recently had to travel out-of-town for work. Our family’s preference for traveling light meant my ninja packing skills fit 3 days of business-casual clothing and traveling-office gadgets into a 40L travel backpack. Some of my colleagues were amazed–as they wheeled their full-sized suitcases down the hall. As a pick-up-truck family, packing light for travel has always been our thing. We just don’t have space for stuff.  Our Spring Break Road Trip really had us paring down to the essentials to travel 5,000 miles with practically no storage space other … Continue Reading…

Camping and Hiking at Tallulah Gorge State Park, Georgia

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 10, 2018 by JamieSeptember 9, 2018 3
Camping and Hiking at Tallulah Gorge George...we came, we saw, we walked 1,099 steps--it was beautiful! You should do it! via Walking in High Cotton

Camping and hiking as a family is something we do a lot of–but not normally in a formal public campground. On our Spring Break Road Trip it was a brand new experience for our crew to “camp” with access to an electrical outlet and a hose! I don’t think we even used the electricity at any of our campsites. We didn’t even think about it being there. (What? Not even to charge your phones for all those great family pictures? Nope–invest in an external charger. You’ll never have to worry about … Continue Reading…

How to Make a Paper Mache Shark for Shark Week

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 27, 2018 by JamieMarch 30, 2020

If you’ve been following us on Facebook, you’ve probably seen some of our Shark Week activities. We’re doing a summer unit study on Marine Biology (along with our unit on Archaeology) and Discovery Shark Week has been a great fit for some hands-on family fun learning! We’ve had some ocean-themed food, some shark games, and our big group project of building a paper mache shark! This is a very simple project with no special supplies needed. We had everything on hand already. I’ve shared it here in a lot of … Continue Reading…

How to UnPlan Your Next Family Road Trip

Walking in High Cotton Posted on April 27, 2018 by JamieApril 27, 2018 2
How to UnPlan your next family road trip...flexible planning ideas for fun and adventure without over scheduling your next family vacation. via Walking in High Cotton

Our recent spring break road trip adventure was 10 days and 4,000 miles together. We had a great time and are already plotting our next trip! I say “plotting” and not “planning” because this was a very (very, very!) loosely “planned” trip and I’m sure the next one will be too. Our family likes to call our NOT-AT-ALL-PLANNING style of planning “being flexible.” {smile} Everyone keeps asking me how in the world I planned our awesome trip…well, in my mind, I didn’t. We laid out a very basic route with a few … Continue Reading…

10 Road Trip Car Activities for the Whole Family

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 28, 2018 by JamieMarch 26, 2018
10 great activities for the whole family to enjoy TOGETHER in the car! via Walking in High Cotton

At the beginning of our series of Road Trip posts, I mentioned that we are really looking forward to a fun, relaxed, vacation-feel to our travels. So most of our planning focused on two points… #1. Fun, simple activities while we’re IN the car! #2. Not being IN the car the whole time! I already shared about the individual road trip travel activity cases that we made each kiddo for some of our car time. But in our family, we have a couple of reluctant readers, who just also happen … Continue Reading…

DIY Personalized Travel Sticker for Family Road Trips

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 22, 2018 by JamieMarch 20, 2018
DIY Travel Stickers via Walking in High Cotton. Design, print, slap them on your gear and GO! Easy, thrifty, fun.

Have you seen those cute, vintage luggage and travel stickers? I don’t mean luggage tags (we have those already!) I mean the tourist-y collectible stickers with bright images and place names on them. You slap them on your suitcase, or your laptop or notebook, and share your adventures with the world! They’re also a great little souvenir or memento from your travels. It seemed like a fun idea to add to our spring break family road trip plan. I like the way it takes the idea of a “family vacation” to a … Continue Reading…

Road Trips to Nowhere Just for Family Fun

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 16, 2018 by JamieMarch 26, 2018 2

So, in just a week or two we’re loading the crew up in the truck and heading out on a 3,000-mile journey to nowhere. Sound crazy? Which part? The 3 kids in a truck for 3,000 miles in 8 days, or the journey to nowhere? {smile} We’re excited. It’s been a long time since we took a family vacation. Ok, we pretty much never have. We travel to visit family and call it a vacation. We go to parties, family reunions, the beach, all that family stuff–which we totally love, … Continue Reading…

Building Puzzles…Activities for Busy Families

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 28, 2016 by JamieDecember 7, 2018
Building Puzzles...Activities for Busy Families {via Walking in High Cotton}

We stay pretty busy around here. Especially during the school year. Between school, work, the farm, church, and just trying to bathe, eat, and sleep, we don’t find much relax and hang out time. So we work pretty hard to make sure that we set aside some special “family time” activities to do together at home. This usually involves a lot of compromises. Maybe the house is a mess but we ignore it. Or we let everyone eat dinner in the living room so at least we’re still eating together … Continue Reading…

Presenting…Family Movie Night!

Walking in High Cotton Posted on December 6, 2013 by JamieMarch 31, 2017 3
How we make weekly Family Movie Night work for our busy family of 5. {@www.walkinginhighcotton.net}

I LOVE Family Movie Night. We all do. It’s the perfect, leave the work/school-week behind and transition to the weekend-at-home ritual for us. There’s tons of ideas for these awesome themed family movies nights on Pinterest now. I have a whole Family Movie Night board because some of them are so cool I want to try them too. But we do Family Movie Night every Friday, so ours looks a little different most of the time. It started out as me wanting one night a week where no one complained about what … Continue Reading…

Field Gazing and Deer in the Soybeans

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 11, 2011 by JamieMarch 31, 2017 4

So, once again I’ve got tons of writing material from the weekend. But the moments that stick out the most for me right now are just 5 minutes before bedtime on Sunday. We were wrapping up a late dinner when Mr. Fix-It’s sister called, which got the kids a bit of a reprieve from heading straight to bed. Mr. Fix-It when out on the porch to chat to get away from the chorus of “I wanna talk to her!” Which just meant that they followed him out, of course. Speedracer … Continue Reading…

Cowboy Days

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 27, 2010 by JamieApril 25, 2017 2
Cowboy Days on the Dominion Historic Railway

That post title could mean so many things when living with this little guy… But this time it’s actually someone else’s title. This weekend we went to visit Mr. Fix-It’s mom and step-dad for Cowboy Days in their little town a few hours away.  Mimi and Papa knew our kiddos would love it. We got to take our first train ride as a family.  Actually, it was my first time on a train other than at the zoo. We had Aunts and Uncles and cousins along as well.   The … Continue Reading…
