A Tough Row to Hoe

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 1, 2014 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

You know something I struggle with? Not getting my own way. {smile} But you know what’s REALLY hard? Compromising what I want for what I know is right–and things are STILL not easy. For some reason (Christian immaturity, probably!) I feel like when I submit to God in something, the clouds should break open and sunshine should pour through and everything should become rainbows and roses and suddenly I’m on easy street. I mean, I’m doing the Will of God–that means it should be easy, right? Ha! Not so much. … Continue Reading…

When Things Change…the Daily Farm Adventures {55}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 11, 2014 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020 5

The Ladybug has been off at camp this week and it’s been just us and the boys. It’s made for an interesting change in the household dynamic, to say the least. {smile} We all miss her, but Speedracer really misses her. Monday evening the boys and I rounded up and penned the sheep. Then a red pick up truck rolled into the driveway with a stock rack on the back. They loaded up a couple sheep and a couple chickens and drove away. I may have cried. Just a little. … Continue Reading…

10 Little Daily Routines for the School Year

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 11, 2012 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 4
10 Little Routines for the New School Year @ www.walkinginhighcotton.net

I have to admit, I love daily routines. I’m not a detail person, so having a solid routine keeps me from being stuck dealing with details all the time and leaves me to think big thoughts and make big plans and dream big dreams. {In contrast, Mr. Fix-It takes “fly by the seat of your pants” and “taking the scenic route” to new and undiscovered heights!} This year’s school change has been really big for our household. Really big. It’s completely changed up our household routine and made it much … Continue Reading…

Wednesday Windings 8/25/2010

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 25, 2010 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 2

So often I run out of time for handcrafting anything.  My family is my 1st, #1, top-of-the-list priority, my job and the farm are my 2nd priority (priorities?), and managing my household is my 3rd priority.  And if I manage to run into a day with 36 hours instead of 24, my hobbies (crafting, reading, writing) are my 4th priority.  So, while my mother-heart hates Back-to-School time, I do love it when my hobby happens to magically align with my #1 priority and I have something crafty to post! A … Continue Reading…

The Next Time You See This It Will Be 2026…

Walking in High Cotton Posted on May 23, 2013 by Jamie OliverSeptember 7, 2019 3

…Those were the school Principle’s words as he announced the Cowboy’s K5 graduating class that week. I think I stopped breathing for a moment or two. I think K5 graduation was thought up just remind parents that no matter how tough parenting gets, it’s only a brief season and you should enjoy it while it lasts. Here today, college tomorrow. (Or maybe it was thought up because children were leaving preschool and moving into primary school. But that’s so prosaic.) I have to admit, I have some reservations about giving … Continue Reading…

10 Books on Time Management for the Busy Momma

Walking in High Cotton Posted on March 21, 2014 by Jamie OliverJuly 18, 2017 3
10 books for BUSY MOMS {via www.walkinginhighcotton.net} #workmom #parenting #lifehacks #reading #books

{WOW–How ironic that I missed posting about time management yesterday because I ran out of time!! Life is crazy! Here’s what was supposed to be yesterday’s post..enjoy!} We got home from church last night and I took a look at my calendar and realize that I was double–no triple!–booked for this afternoon between two sports practices and an evening meeting for work. First I wanted to cry, but it was one of those cases where all I’d end up with was a headache and problem I still had to solve. … Continue Reading…

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 23, 2012 by Jamie OliverApril 9, 2017 2

This week is our first week back to school, and I’m joining 21 other bloggers in a 5 Days of Organizing and Cleaning series. Monday: It Starts at Home Tuesday: Supplies and Gear Wednesday: Food and Meal Planning Thursday: Simple Wardrobes Friday: Fresh Routines and Learning Lifestyles.   I’ve posted on and off all summer here and over on the Walking in High Cotton Facebook page about my frustrations with finding appropriate clothes for the Ladybug. Modest clothes. Clothes that let her express herself without exposing herself. It’s harder than … Continue Reading…

5 Days of Organizing for Back to School…It Starts at Home

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 20, 2012 by Jamie OliverMarch 12, 2017

This week is actually back to school week for us (yes, today is our first day at our new school!) and I’m joining 21 other bloggers in a 5 Days of Organizing and Cleaning series, so for the next couple days I’ll be talking about organizing for the school year. I’ll be sharing thoughts on gear and supplies (do your kiddos need a nap mat?), food and clothes (do you use uniforms?), and creating a “learning lifestyle” at home. I’ll also be sharing some specific tips on getting off on … Continue Reading…

10 Craft Supplies That Weren’t On My List!

Walking in High Cotton Posted on January 29, 2013 by Jamie OliverMarch 12, 2017 2

I’m a crafty sort of person. When my kiddos need something for school, I’ve got twine, paper, glue, scissors, thread, fabric scraps, buttons, construction paper, markers, chalk, pipe cleaners, dried macaroni, googly-eyes, yarn, miscellaneous sheets of transparency from report covers and craft supply packages…all the usual crafty suspects. But when the Ladybug went to build her model of Jupiter (and 4 of the 63 moons!) we ran into a couple things I just wasn’t quite prepared for and we had to do quite a bit of scavenging to make it … Continue Reading…

Farther Along We’ll Understand Why

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 9, 2012 by Jamie OliverMarch 12, 2017 5

You know, I’ve felt pretty beaten up, spiritually speaking, this summer. I’ve missed my parents and longed for their steady guidance desperately. I’ve floundered with this school change–speaking acceptance out of my mouth while my heart and mind struggled frantically against it. I’ve prayed, oh how much I’ve prayed, and then rebelled against the answers I heard. My actions reluctantly followed directions, but my heart was still looking for any crack or hole to slip out of, any weakness in the wall to exploit, any excuse to change directions. Let’s … Continue Reading…

Our Teeny-Tiny Mini Unit Study on the Oregon Trail

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 19, 2012 by Jamie OliverFebruary 24, 2017 1

I’ve been reading some great articles about everyone starting to plan out their homeschool year, and while it hurts my heart that we still won’t be homeschooling full-time, I have been so happy with how some of our summer learning plans have gone that it also makes me feel energized for planning our own year. Over the last two months we’ve done our first two, homemade, mini unit studies, one with Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder, and one we just finished with The Stout-Hearted Seven by  Neta Lohnes Frazier. … Continue Reading…

First Day of School

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 19, 2013 by Jamie OliverAugust 19, 2013 4

Want to see why I haven’t been writing much lately? Ok, look at this… And then look at this… And then look at THIS… And cue the tears. My moments have been taken up with planning, prepping, and praying as we wrap up the summer and start into our fall with soccer practice, school starting, lamb harvest coming, and ever more house painting to be done. The Ladybug is starting 4th grade this year and told me that she knows how things are going to be now, so it’s going … Continue Reading…

The Cowboy’s Davy Crockett Speech!

Walking in High Cotton Posted on November 5, 2012 by Jamie OliverNovember 5, 2012

Well, I think I figured it out! Here’s the little video of his first place Davy Crockett speech from the American Heritage Dinner on Friday night. He stumbled a bit at the very end, but that was an awfully big stage with an awful lot of people watching him! {smile} I could see he was nervous and forgot his little hand gestures. We’re so proud of both of them getting A’s on their first speeches, ever. Oh, how I miss my parents right now. They would have been just bursting … Continue Reading…
