How to Make a Great Outdoor Space for Summer Family Time. Simple and budget friendly tips. via Walking in High Cotton

I’ve written before about how hard it can be to leave the farm for a vacation in the summer time. So we staycation a lot. And honestly, that’s probably more liberal than it deserves. We “staycation” a lot in the summer. On Friday and Saturday evenings. On our own back porch. After working all day. {smile} We’re blessed that the farm provides everything one could need to get a little rest and relaxation without having to go anywhere at all! It can truly feel like a “family vacation” with very little … Continue Reading…

8 Tips for Carefree Flower Beds for Busy Moms

8 tips for carefree flower beds for busy moms--add color without the work. via Walking in High Cotton

I love having beautiful flowers blooming all around the house in the spring and summer, but I’m no green thumb! And a lot of the DIY garden articles I love to read and google do not have the same definition of “low maintenance” or “easy-care” that I do! I don’t even bother with indoor plants anymore and I have a long history of killing outdoor plants by neglect. I just get too busy for all the weeding, trimming, deadheading, watering, splitting and replanting. Besides, our vegetable garden takes up most of … Continue Reading…

Hay Bales, Duck Eggs…And Other Daily Adventures

Walking in High Cotton Posted on October 21, 2013 by Jamie OliverOctober 21, 2013

Now that lamb harvest is over, we’re full-swing into prepping our place for winter. (And since it was 37 degrees this morning at chore time, I’m thinking not a moment too soon!) The first thing is food for the animals. You’re looking for a consistent quality and price for your hay–and it’s hard to find around here! Over the next couple weeks we’ll pick up a couple trailer loads of hay and a pallet of bagged feed. A pallet is 45 bags, by the way. We use Purina food (again, … Continue Reading…

Our Outdoor Spaces

Walking in High Cotton Posted on June 26, 2012 by Jamie OliverJune 25, 2012

Around here, porches aren’t just ornaments for the front of your house. Around here, porches are deep enough to actually face the person you’re sitting next to. Around here, porches are just another room on your house…albeit a drafty one. {grin} Our outdoor spaces are as much a part of our home as our indoor spaces. We’ve hosted birthdays, reunions, playdates and puppy intros on our porches, and today I’m over at Homemaker’s Challenge with some tips on making your porch and outdoor spaces entertainment-worthy……READ MORE…   Follow us, chat … Continue Reading…

Charlotte’s Web

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 26, 2011 by Jamie OliverSeptember 26, 2011 2

This post is not about a children’s book. The other day the crew was sitting at the breakfast table before school and Speedracer started hollering about a spider outside. “Ewwww. There’s a spiDer on the porch!” (He’s been reminded about the “d” so much it’s a whole new syllable for him now.) Now, spiders are allowed on the porch. Mostly. High up in the corners. I mean, it’s the country. I try to be fair. But then I looked out the window. It was one of those big black and … Continue Reading…
