New Babies, New Jammies, New Year…the Daily Farm Adventures {96}

Walking in High Cotton Posted on January 4, 2016 by Jamie OliverMarch 30, 2020

As you may have seen on Facebook, we started off our Christmas holiday with a new calf on Christmas Eve morning! The Cowboy found him out there with his Momma while doing the morning chores. Molly is such a good momma that she’s never needed any help–and always has boys! Good for the freezer, but I wish she’d throw a heifer because we’d definitely keep her. Her calves also always start out such a lovely fawn brown, but eventually turn gray like our bull Chester. We spent the rest of … Continue Reading…

A Proverbs 31 Sewing Project…Wednesday Windings 04/20/2011

Walking in High Cotton Posted on April 20, 2011 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 7

So, it’s Wednesday and I must admit, I’m little ambivalent towards my Wednesday Windings {LINK UP} at the moment. Hosting a link up takes quite a bit of set-up, promotion and commitment–if you want it to be successful, anyway. Believe me, I’ve learned a lot trying this little venture out! And while I love crafting and all the great ladies I’ve met while working on it, there’s a lot of already great craft link ups out there. I mean really great one. Ones with 100s of awesome craft projects every … Continue Reading…

Sock Snakes and Paper Penguins

Walking in High Cotton Posted on June 24, 2011 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 6

My adventures with being SuperMomma this week are almost over! (Ha!) I’ve done fleece bats, sock snakes, paper penguins, and I’ve got to come up with 3 fish by 5 pm this evening, before I put my cape away for a while. To be serious for a moment, VBS ends tonight and while the kids have had a great time, it’s been a long week. We get up early around here and now they’ve been staying up late too. They’re tired. And I know all the amazing VBS workers at church … Continue Reading…

Sewing Goldfish Smiles…Wednesday Windings 06/29/2011

Walking in High Cotton Posted on June 29, 2011 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 4

Last week I detailed my VBS adventures with bats, snakes and penguins, and the grand finale on Friday was fish. Yep, fish. Friday at lunch my totally not-artistic self hand-drew a pattern for goldfish and whipped them together. I’ve discovered that there’s a simplicity of scale involved in sewing. Smaller is not always better because it makes it hard to turn inside out, stuff, or edge. There’s a perfect size that’s not too big and not too small… I cut some ribbon for a handle and tucked that in between … Continue Reading…

Craft Interupted…Wednesday Windings 07/20/2011

Walking in High Cotton Posted on July 20, 2011 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 9

Normally I love using Wednesdays to show you some new creative venture I’ve been working on. I have been working on stuff (oh boy, have I been working on stuff!) but I ran into a bit of a problem last night. I’m what I like to fondly title a “Messy Creative.” (Mr. Fix-It calls it something else.) Meaning I can’t stop in the middle of my creative flow  to clean up and put stuff away just because I’m not using it at the moment. I just shove it to the … Continue Reading…

Wallets for My Boys

Walking in High Cotton Posted on January 11, 2012 by Jamie OliverSeptember 8, 2019 9

I got my workshop all neatened up while I was off at Christmas, even though I was too busy with the kiddos to do much crafting. But part of my New Years planning is that I’ve written out a rather daunting list of all the crafting, sewing, and creating that I want to get done this year. The good news is that I have a whole year. The bad news is that I have a big list. But I got started the other day with something that I’ve been promising … Continue Reading…

Costumes and Cows in the Chicken Coop…Thankful Thursdays #5

Walking in High Cotton Posted on October 17, 2013 by Jamie OliverMarch 9, 2017

Boy, I’m thankful that lamb harvest for the year is over. We just reduced the amount of mouth to feed over the winter by about 50%! And everyone seemed satisfied with their product and how it went. (Except for the Cowboy who is totally bummed that he missed it all just for school!) And I’m thankful that the weather seems to have cleared up. It’s still a bit soggy, but nothing to complain about since we had a week of steady rain! I’m also thankful to Mr. Fix-It for taking … Continue Reading…

A Few Free Web Favorites

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 10, 2012 by Jamie OliverMarch 9, 2017 1

This weekend we’ve got a lot going on. The Ladybug and I are heading up to Northern Virginia to visit the American Girl Store for her birthday. We’ll be meeting my sister (who is fondly and forever known to me as Cheese) and niece (the Diva), and my mother-in-law (that would be the Mimi) and other niece (whom we’ll fondly call Curls from here on out) for lunch, and shopping, and then dinner at the American Girl Bistro. And my men are going to be staying home and cleaning up … Continue Reading…

Wednesday Windings 12/08/2010…Sewing and Cardmaking

Walking in High Cotton Posted on December 8, 2010 by Jamie OliverMarch 9, 2017 10

I’d like to introduce you to a new friend of mine.  I think I’m going to call her Bessie (like from Cars for any cartoon-watching adults out there). She and I have a lot of ground to cover between now and the 25th.  Mr. Fix-It is making the Ladybug a bea-u-ti-ful bed for her American Girl doll for Christmas… …And that means I have to make everything else–sheets, pillow, blanket, etc.  I have a little, beginner sewing machine.  My mom got it for me about 8 years ago for Christmas. … Continue Reading…

Tinkerbell Party Favor Bags

Walking in High Cotton Posted on August 17, 2011 by Jamie OliverNovember 20, 2013 2

I decided that I was going to try to make “simple and quick” reversible drawstring favor bags for the Ladybug’s recent birthday party. (Because buying some from the Dollar Store was just too much work, right?) So I got some adorable Tinkerbell flannel on sale and found about 2,700 tutorials online (none of which met my expectations for “simple and quick”, but we’ll save that for another post) for guidance. Then I put it off until the 11th hour. Literally. My sister and I got to work on them at … Continue Reading…

Mod-Podge and Davy Crockett

Walking in High Cotton Posted on October 24, 2012 by Jamie OliverOctober 23, 2012 1

So, what does motherhood mean? Motherhood means going out in the yard in your slippers to rescue a rotting cow horn from the dog’s mouth to help your son become Davy Crockett. What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever had to Mod-Podge together at the last moment? This ranks right up there for me. The Cowboy watched Davy Crockett as part of his character research for his American Heritage Speech at school and got fixated on the powder horn. (Probably because I had already produced fringed pants, a coonskin cap, and … Continue Reading…

Simple Jumper Dress for Girls

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 19, 2012 by Jamie OliverSeptember 18, 2012 3

I’ve posted here and on Facebook about my frustration with finding what we consider appropriate girl clothes. Something I haven’t mentioned as much is that my Ladybug is also rather picky. She has her own style–I’m not always clear on exactly what it is!–and she wants to be able to stick to it. It’s sort of…”mis-matched with a Bohemian flair.” {smile} She knows how long she wants stuff, how loose she wants stuff, and what colors she likes. I’m trying to get on-board, but sometimes it’s tough! (You know, like … Continue Reading…

Christmas Costumes

Walking in High Cotton Posted on December 9, 2011 by Jamie OliverDecember 9, 2011 3

I mentioned the other day that we’re working on a float for the Christmas parade. Well, we got a big box of costumes from church as part of our “time period” focus for our manger scene. They’re definitely universally-sized. Adult universal sizes. Mr. Fix-It pointed out that all they have to do is sit there and sing, but even the smallest one was so bulky that Speedracer almost cried when I made him try it on. There was so much material gathered into his belt he couldn’t move his arms … Continue Reading…

Vintage Floral Tote Bag

Walking in High Cotton Posted on September 7, 2011 by Jamie OliverSeptember 5, 2011 7

I got this beautiful vintage floral fabric from JoAnnes a while back and finally got a few things sewn up with it. One was this reversible tote bag. It’s a big bag–like beach bag size. It turned out much bigger than I expected (which is funny since I’m the one that cut it out). It would fit a lot of groceries or towels. It would probably work great for a gym bag or a knitting project bag too. Roomy and easy to access. I love fabrics that have a lot … Continue Reading…
