So I’m heading up to the Titus 2:1 Conference this weekend (heading out tomorrow morning actually–yea!!) which is being held in Northern Virgina.
Which just happens to be my hometown.
(Which is an awkward way to express it since Northern Virginia is a HUGE place encompassing things that didn’t even exist when I was growing up there and the whole thing isn’t my hometown, just the tiny corner of Falls Church, but I digress…)
Which naturally sets my mind back to who I was when I lived there.
Ah, the blissful ignorance of not knowing what you don’t know! {smile}
And who I am now.
{Cue ironic laughter.}

Career path?
I didn’t even know my professional field existed before my 4th year in college.
Farm life?
I pictured neat, green fields full of frolicking dogs. And a couple horses.
Marriage? Motherhood?
Ha. Hahahaha. No clue.

So here’s a few things I never thought I’d say way back then…when I didn’t know what I didn’t know. (Go ahead and laugh….I am. Mostly.)
WORK
- “It’s not that bad. We’re only $100,000 short.”
- “Having defined defensible space increases tenant participation in property maintenance.”
- “No, I can’t make it. I have pothole repair training.”
- “Came in better than I thought–only $1,217,000.00″
- “Sorry I’m late, I had a ewe in labor this morning and ended up having to pull the lamb. But no worries! They’re all fine!”
MOTHERHOOD
- “Don’t come out of the bathroom without your underwear on!”
- “If a hole smells like a skunk, I’d suggest you stop poking sticks in it. You will sleep on the porch if you come home stinkin’–I’ve been down that road with the dog!”
- “No more talk about naked chickens!”
- “If you have to get sick before we get home throw up in your lunchbox.”

FARM
- “Ok. Twice a day rinse with iodine until the pus is all gone and you can see pink, granular tissue. Got it.”
- “What’s ‘cud’? Oh that’s half-digested grass that they spit up from their first stomach and chew on for a while again before they swallow it again. They’ll spend the whole afternoon just laying there chewing on grass vomit.”
- “I can’t find the afterbirth in the field. She must have eaten it.”
- “Are we going to chop their heads off before or after we pluck them?”
It occasionally occurs to me to wonder what on earth my momma would think of me, while I’m dusting chicken feathers off my black pencil skirt, or holding of a herd of cows with a fence post.
But she’s probably just say, “Of course. I always knew you’d get there. I told you, you could accomplish whatever you set your mind to.”
Do you ever notice that you’re not who you thought you’d be? Are you ok with that?
