Hawks, Hay, and Hefty Ewes…the Daily Farm Adventures
That post title is kinda crazy, huh? {smile}
Someone asked me what we were doing this weekend and I stopped for a minute and said, “well…uh…I don’t know. But I’m sure we have something to do.” The feeling of not already being scheduled morning, noon, and night for the whole weekend felt a little…strange. I’m sure I’m forgetting something!

We’ve had a hawk hanging around lately. I haven’t gotten great pictures, but I’ve gotten a few snaps.
We integrated Tag in with the rest of the flock this morning. He’s been separated in a small field for a few days to get adjusted. We were going to keep him there longer, but he actually seemed to be growing more agitated and stressed by not being able to join the flock, rather than settling down after leaving the zoo. They all seem to be doing fine. They were pretty much completely ignoring him and after a few minutes he settled right down and started grazing with the rest of them. That’s the first time we’ve seen him eat (grain or grazing!) since he got here, so I think he’s doing fine.

I had all these pictures labeled as “red-tailed hawk” but it turns out after looking at the pictures that it’s a red-shouldered hawk instead.
Our new winter rye field is green (brilliant, shocking, emerald green!), but everything else around here is pretty much brown. We’ve started hay feeding, although the sheep are particularly good grazers and are hardly munching on the bales at all. The cows spend all day standing around the bale snacking. Of course, Molly and Annabelle are pregnant again, so I forgive them. {smile}

My pictures didn’t turn out as well as I’d hoped, but he’s been hanging around a lot, so I’m sure I’ll get another chance.
Coming off of fresh, green, spring-summer-fall grass, our ewes are all in top condition. Meaning some of them are downright FAT! {smile} Breeding season is over, so hopefully they are all in the early-early stages of pregnancy, but those are grass bellies, not lamb bellies!
I’m ready for a slower weekend. I’m ready to take a few laps around the field in the crisp fall air. I’m ready to kick up a few bright leaves and enjoy the never-actually-quiet quiet around the farm this weekend.
Do you have any big plans this weekend?
