The Working Mom-Sick Kids Shuffle
Our crew has been seriously under the weather over here. Which is a shame since the weather has suddenly been so darn nice! It was in the 80s the last couple days! I think everyone seems to be on the mend–slowly. But it’s hard to tell with how dramatic the Cowboy is. Being sick brings out his inner movie star. He could wring sympathy from a rock when he gets to moping around here like he’s about to die, pulling that cheesy fake cough out of his pocket at a moment’s notice if you haven’t been giving him enough attention.
Mr. Fix-It and I have been doing the working parent-sick kids shuffle around here.
“Can you take off?”
“Do you have a meeting you can’t miss?”
“If I do the morning, can you do the afternoon?”
It’s nerve-wracking. I try to get extra work done while I’m in the office so that taking off later doesn’t mess any of my projects up–but then I’m sitting at my desk and can hardly concentrate because all I can think about is did they get their medicine, and did they get their ice water re-filled, and does Mr. Fix-It know where the oyster crackers are?
It’s like being ripped into a thousand pieces at once.
But I am so thankful today.
I’m thankful that we have health insurance. Thankful that we have access to doctors. Thankful that we can afford medicine and have access to pharmacies that carry what we need.
I’m thankful that I have a job with sick leave and can be off to care for my little ones–even if it’s not every moment.
I’m thankful that I have a husband that shares the shuffle with me.
And I’m thankful my kiddos are on the mend and the weekend’s coming and tomorrow is another day.
Right now we don’t really have plans for the weekend. I may be filling ice-water bottles to sooth sore throats and snuggling sweaty bodies. Or we may be pulling weeds and scrubbing water buckets.
How about you? Any big plans?
Oh my – so glad that y’all are on the mend! We are staying simple here. My mom is coming for a visit and I have a consignment sale on Saturday.
I’m having a sleep over at a friends, a soccer game on Sunday, and hopefully playtime with cute baby goats!
I hope your kids get well soon! It must be very hard to worry about them when your are at work.
