Fixing Fences…and Other Daily Adventures
Beautiful Fall weather is upon us–which means we have lots of homestead chores and farm maintenance just waiting for a little attention. It’s so much nicer to take on some of these outdoor projects when the sun is shining but it’s not 27,000 degrees plus 1400% humidity outside! And lamb harvest and having customers coming around on a regular basis again is also great motivation to do a little much-needed sprucing up! {smile}

The boys were helping Mr. Fix-It hang and straighten up some gates on Saturday after soccer.
Saturday it was actually pretty warm around here for October. I even managed to get a little sunburned! But there was no humidity and the occasional breeze so it was livable. The boys were cleaning out the barn and fixing up some gates. The Ladybug and I were scrubbing water buckets and feeders and re-bedding the chicken house. And Penny was trotting back and forth between everyone, occasionally thinking about chasing a chicken but then changing her mind like a good dog.

Speedracer (in green) has had a really helpful attitude lately. That’s something he struggles with, so I’m glad to see a little extra maturity lately!
Mr. Fix-It also did some mowing (there’s always mowing to do!) and we picked up a lot of this and that lying around. Things like feed pans, water buckets in empty fields, feed scoops (aka old coffee canisters!), baling twine, and other miscellaneous stuff that sometimes gets away from you on a daily basis when you’re just trying to keep everyone fed and watered and then get to showers, dinner and homework. (We’re also on a well-traveled road so we get a lot of trash blowing from the roadway into our ditch–and if we’re caught up on the mowing then it keeps blowing right across into our fields!)

As usual, our maintenance also lead to a long list of replacement needs and bigger projects to tackle–later. {smile}
I posted on Facebook about trying some poultry netting to expand the duck pen. Uh, yeah, #farmerfail there. They didn’t even have the courtesy to wait until I was back out of the field before a male-female pair of Rouens flew out. They winged in a big circle around the field and came back to their compatriots in the field and pushed right through the netting to get back to the water bucket.
While the rest of the flock cackled along with their little quaaaack-ack-ack-ack-ack laugh.
I really wanted to be mad. But how do you explain being mad at a duck because it laughed at you? Besides, their laughter is sort of infectious–I’m chuckling now just thinking about how they sound!

The Cowboy spend the whole day dirty and sweaty…and happy.
How was your recent weekend? We finally got some rain on Monday, so our new fall grass is finally sprouting a bit. Our younger Red-Bull (remember that character that got his head stuck in the water bucket?) has been getting pushy and noisy with our older bull, Chester, as the ladies come into season. Chester’s an old pro at handling these pushy young bulls and Red-Bull will be “harvested” next week as well.
It’s also breeding season for the sheep and our ram, Tiberius, has started chasing the ladies around the pasture. So remember, if you’re thinking of visiting a farm this Fall, you might want to discuss the…um…facts of life…with the kiddos. In real life everyone is twidderpatted in the Fall, not the spring, so you never know what you’ll see out here!
Since it’s harvest time I also have a great eBook special to share with you! The Harvest Your Health eBook Bundle! A whole pile of ebooks, meal planners, magazines, and other discounts all related to natural home and health, cooking and preparing real food, and simplifying your lifestyle all bundled together and offered at 97% off! It’s awesome! The meal planning and real food titles alone are worth it if you ask me (Pinterest has got me exploring the idea of Paleo right now too and this is a perfect fit). I was also very excited to see the handful of Simple Living titles in there.
But it’s only available for 1 week at this price!
