Rainy Days…Thankful Thursdays #4

thankful thursday graphicWe’re a bit soggy around here. We go from no rain for weeks, to steady rain for days! It’s been so dry that it’s already rained for more than 24 hours and we’re just starting to get flooding. 24 hours of rain just soaked right in! Needless to say, it makes the chores a mucky mess and the animals kinda crabby and the kiddos a little out of sorts.

Which puts the momma a little out of sorts too! {smile}

It’s days–and weeks!–like this that I’m glad I’ve learned to treat being Thankful as a discipline, not just a random action. Because sometimes you have to dig a little to find the gold. You have to acknowledge the value of being refined by the fire. You have to accept the rain to watch the grass grow. {smile}

So today I’m thankful for tiny, bright green, sprigs of grass just start to pop up.

Yeah, we're a little wet lately.
Yeah, we’re a little wet lately. But see those streaks and spots of bright green new grass?

And I’m thankful that the Ladybug has had a light week of school work. They had Monday off; she worked hard to finish her homework in study hall on Tuesday before soccer practice (which ended up being cancelled); and Wednesdays they don’t get homework to go to church. We probably should have used the reprieve to do more studying. But after such a struggle to the start of the year and her just getting over a fever last week, it was nice  to take it easy for a few days.

It's been a bit windy too. The chickens are hunkered down waiting for it to pass.

And I’m thankful that the Ladybug and I re-bedded the chicken house this weekend. I’m sure it’s a bit mucky in there now, but it would truly be a disgusting disaster right now if we hadn’t taken care of that this past weekend before the rains came in! I’m thankful for the good weather we just had so that we could get some maintenance done before this bad weather came in!

The ducks are loving it though! They're out there paddling through the low spots like it's their very own pond!
The ducks are loving it though! They’re out there with the sheep, paddling through the low spots like it’s their very own pond! The sheep come out whenever the rain eases up.

And I’m thankful for Columbus Day coming up. The kiddos will have school on the 14th (and Mr. Fix-It never gets off for these little, inconsequential holidays) so I’ll be home ALL ALONE for the day! Does it sound terrible that I’m a little excited? Normally I’d feel a little guilty about it–and I’ll probably just spend the day cleaning the house–but the idea of a whole day of quiet is very appealing right now!

I’m also thankful that lamb harvest day is the 15th. It’ll be a busy, hectic weekend prepping and a busy day on Tuesday, but I’m glad it’s almost here and almost over! {smile} We’ll move right in to winter prep afterwards, but it will feel good to have that big annual milestone behind us.

The cows have been in hiding for two days now. They hate getting wet!
