Lambs are Here! …the Daily Farm Adventures {104}
Well, the crew came running back in from chores the other day to holler that WE HAVE LAMBS!
You may remember that we’ve been on lamb watch for a week or two now because the ladies have had “the waddle.”
The only thing cuter than the lambs themselves, was when the crew ran back inside to grab their tablets to take pictures and videos.
We still only have this healthy set of twins on the ground, and 9 more ewes to deliver.
But they’re doing very well and we’re happy with that. Of course, we’re expecting snow this weekend, so it wouldn’t surprise me if we have a couple more go any time now. {smile} We have mild winters so there’s a few good things about lambing in “bad” weather. First–it’s really not that bad, although we do hate mud. Second–it’s just cold enough that bugs and parasites are gone or not very active–flies, gnats, and mosquitoes can carry a lot of sickness and infection. Third–we’re feeding grain anyway. By the time we’re weaning the ewes off grain for their pregnancy and winter health, the grass is coming in well for producing milk and nibbling babies.
Once the lambing starts, they tend to fall in quick groups–a couple will deliver, then a break for a week or two, then a couple more–through about a 6 week period.
Our flock is half the size of last year, so lambing season is a little more low key for us this year. Last year was a tough year–but that’s unusual. We’re praying that things go smoother this year.
How are things at your homeplace? Buttoning up for some more cold weather?
We just got the last of 5 ewes delivered and now have tripled the flock with 11 lambs. We got our first set of triplets and mom fed all three just fine.Love farm life during lambing season.
Good for momma! We always tell the kiddos that momma is the best choice for lambs, even though the idea of bottle babies is fun. Glad your season is going well! We’re expecting our next group to drop any time now.
