Well, I missed Thankful Thursday this week–but I was thankful on Thursday. Thankful for safe travel back and forth to a conference for 3 days. Thankful for the pretty wildflowers on the side of the road while I was stuck in traffic behind a logging truck, a school bus, a combine, and two tractors. Thankful for the beautiful weather that I hardly got to enjoy–because at least I didn’t have to drive 70 miles each way for three days in the rain.
And thankful for Mr. Fix-It holding it all together while I breezed in and out, in and out, out all week!
And I’m thankful it’s Friday!
Although we don’t have a lazy weekend planned like I’d like.
Penny hunting 101–first you have to notice that she’s not at home and the gate is open.We’ve got to finish up the kiddos American Heritage speeches this weekend. This year, the Ladybug is going to be Pocahontas; the Cowboy is going to be Captain John Smith; and Speedracer is going to be John Deere.
You wouldn’t believe how hard it’s been to dig up some good stuff about John Smith. Turns out he was pretty much a ruthless mercenary that didn’t get along with anyone. Who knew, right? I have to pull costumes together too, and let me just warn you to never, ever, ever search Google with your children. Turns out there’s an awful lot of highly inappropriate Pocahontas “costumes” out there. As a matter of fact, we didn’t find anything that was helpful at all (and my eyeballs feel seared). We’ll be winging it.
Then you have to grab a leash because she’s probably not going to want to come home (or she would have come when you started hollering for her).This weekend we’ll have soccer and then farm chores. We’ve got customers coming out to choose lambs and put deposits down (most will be picked up October 15th). The kiddos are giving a little push back about selling all the lambs. I don’t blame them–part of me would like to keep them all too! But I think it’s an awfully good life lesson that we can’t always have what we want and sometimes we have to accept tough choices. I also think it teaches maturity. To understand that our choices (like eating dinner each night) involve real life and death consequences is not an easy lesson, but it’s one that shouldn’t be glossed over.
Then you have to hustle over to the neighbors’ house to make sure she’s not over there chasing their chickens. (Doesn’t happen very often, but any dog can be tempted!)We are keeping one ewe lamb this year to add to our breeding flock. She’s beautiful! (At least I think so!) She’s got great size and proportion for her age. She’s pear-shaped (because big hips mean easy lambing!). She’s got a clean face and legs. (I’m not a fan of scrappy wool on their legs and faces–I like a clean, open, smooth face.) She’s got bright, intelligent eyes. (She’s actually the daughter of one of my favorite ewes, Bug-Eyes, and definitely has that big-eyed look to her.) And she’s got a softer, longer textured wool.
You can immediately pick her out of the flock when you look them over. I think she’s a real winner.
And I just waxed eloquent about a sheep for 100 words!
Then you give up. And the truck pulls in the driveway and she hops out from riding around with Mr. Fix-It. {smile} No wonder the gate was open!Tonight is family movie night, and I’m trying to decided what we should watch. I’m thinking either Heidi, or Book of Ruth, or King of the Wind (I love Richard Harris!). Which would you choose?
