Snapshots of Farm Life
We’ve had VBS this week. That’s Vacation Bible School if you’re not “in the know” like I now am! {grin} I’ve been manning the craft tables each evening–which involves copious amounts of school glue and washable paint and foam cut outs! It’s a lot of work to set up, it’s fun but busy while it’s going on, and then it’s a lot of work to clean up. I’ve written before about VBS adventures when I was “just a parent” {smile} Remember our year of sock snakes and paper penguins and goldfish and fleece bats? This is my first year in full-time service–and it’s just totally renewed my admiration for everything that goes into these programs!
I’ve been sharing some pictures from the week over on Facebook. I’m sure I’ll have some up here next week–but if you want in on the action, you should follow us on Facebook!
We also worked sheep this week. Can you believe the lamb year is almost over? Harvest time is coming up in September! So far they look good! We’ll be weaning in the next week or so–but they’re already about half self-weaned as it is.
Remember our late lambs that I was worried about? Well, one is just fine. The other has joint problems in its front knees and can’t walk completely upright. It’s very sad, and we’ve gone back and forth about what to do. But so far the little guy is managing to compensate for his handicap and keep up with his momma and the flock and is actually growing comparable to his twin.
The kids, of course, want to keep him as a pet.
For now we’re letting it run God’s course and see what happens–but we’re not letting anyone name him.
My sister is coming in to visit this week and staying for the week of the 4th with my niece and nephew. I’d like to get her help planning the Ladybug’s birthday party. (Remember she was my partner in crime when we did the Tinkerbell party?) And she’d like to get my help with some sewing projects. The kids area also excited because they want Ciocia to help them do some fun snack projects that I’ve pinned recently with the Ladybug. (Like these coconut eagle cookie and homemade fruit snacks.) And I’m hoping to rope her into helping me tame the garden and my Tupperware cabinet.
Which probably means we’ll spend every evening sitting on the back porch talking and get nothing done while the kids run wild! {smile}
Sounds perfect, right?
We’ve been making some moves around the farm-yard lately. We moved some of the young layers into the laying house and then moved the laying house across the farm. And we moved Honey and Honeysuckle into the duck pen because they have out-grown every other containment system I have available right now! Remember the dining room table incident?
And apparently they haven’t grown into the duck pen yet because they keep sneaking right out and the Cowboy and Ladybug have to round them back up again before bedtime.
We also took our first camping trip over Father’s Day weekend. I posted some pictures on Facebook, and I’ll be writing about that next week–including our packing lists and a few tips. Like pack twice as much water and half as much food for the dog! The Ladybug loved it so much she wants to invite her friends to go camping for her birthday–“but without the hiking part, Momma, we can just drive in.”{smile} We’re considering a backyard camp out idea–anyone done that sort of thing before?
The Ladybug is also heading off to a week of church camp later this month. She’s very excited–me, not so much. (You know I hate it when they’re out of my reach!) But I think it’s going to be good for her and Mr. Fix-It remembers going to church and boy scout camp fondly. I’ve been getting tips from all the ladies at church, but if you have any, please share!!
In the meantime, be sure to pop over to the Everything Food Prep {BLOG HOP} and check out some of the great posts going up–or add yours!
Wow – you had quite the week! We had VBS last week as well, but I *only* had to do set up 🙂 Getting 2 kids there and juggling Baby J’s nap schedule was quite enough for me!!
