Lambs, Lambs, Lambs…the Daily Farm Adventures {38}
I usually pick the kiddos up from school across the water every evening after work, so this time of year is a little iffy whether we’ll get home before dark or not. If the weather is good, maybe. If it’s cloudy and gets dark early, probably not. But sometimes Mr. Fix-It calls and says, “Hey, I can pick them up on my way home.” Awesome! That saves me an hour or more in the evening! I can go straight home and check on everything and start (and usually finish!) the chores in the light.
Such was Wednesday night.
I went home and saw a new lamb…no TWO new lambs. Brand-spanking new twins! Momma was barely back up on her feet cleaning everyone off.
I ran for the camera and on the way back I caught sight of this…
ANOTHER set of TWINS! My old nemesis Fatty had two hearty little munchkins nestled with her in the grass. Her’s were a bit older, completely cleaned up and dried off, and obviously well on their feet. And Fatty is still…well…fat. {smile} She’s got a bit of an elephant seal face going on in that top picture there because she’s busy chewing her cud there, like it’s no big deal she just birthed twins two hours ago.
So while I’m trying to take pictures of these FOUR babies without upsetting their mommas–who had been through quite enough over the last couple hours!–I started counting noses and came up missing someone. I spied a ewe acting suspicious over by our shelters and went to investigate and found ANOTHER SET OF TWINS!
Yes, 3 sets of twins in one afternoon!
I guess the recent break in the weather kicked them into labor. {smile} On Thursday we had another single as well. 7 lambs in 24 hours. Whew! Everyone seems to be doing just fine too–which is a relief after the rocky start to the season.
We’ve got 10 healthy lambs on the ground and 8 more ewes expecting this season. The nursery pen is a hopping place right about now! {smile}
I also notice on my way out the other day that the daffodils under our farm sign are starting to poke up. It’s been a long, hard winter, but I’m beginning to see Spring around the corner.
I mentioned the new ebook Bundle of the Week on Facebook the other day. It’s 5 ebooks for $7.49 and this week they are all recipe books–it really got me in the mood for cooking with some fresh, springtime garden produce!
Do you have any spring-time news around your homeplace?
See where I’m sharing this week…
They sure can keep you busy!!
What a bunch of lovelies 🙂
congrats!
I think this is the best part of farming–when spring things go well! 🙂
Oh…I wish winter would let up here, more snow last night. Seeing your babies makes me so excited for when our own start arriving.
It’s the best time of year! We’re lucky that we can plan for pretty mild winters around here and lamb pretty early without expecting too much trouble.
Came over from the Prairie Homestead Hop…so exciting to see lambs! I can’t wait til ours come, but that won’t be till May. What good mamas you have! Happy Sproinging!
Yes, we are so happy to have a core of mommas that know what’s what! We went through a few years of trouble and bottle babies and made some changes and are SO glad! These Cluns are awesome at lambing and we rarely need to help more than once a year and even then it’s just to get the little one on his feet and then momma takes right back over. May is a long time–but it’s been a hard winter too.
This is so amazing – and what beautiful pictures you captured!
I just looked outside and saw that my crocuses are above ground – should be blooming soon and the color will mean spring is truly on its way!
Thanks for stopping by. I feel like we’ve got at least one more storm heading over before winter is truly over, but I’ll take the sunshine right now and any other little spring bits we can come by! 🙂
So cute! Gotta love the lambs. Thanks for sharing these fabulous pics.
Oh my word!! They are so adorable!! Nothing cuter than a little, fluffy baby though! How lucky to get so many twins in an afternoon! Oh, and I’m waiting for some signs of springs over here…we’re in for some more su per cold days AND maybe some snow 🙁
