Well, our new box of chicks is doing just fine. Haven’t lost a single one. And yes, they’re still in the living room. Technically the “foyer” but it’s all one big room. {smile} We haven’t gotten a good night’s rest in a week!
One little black chick has a tendency to burst out in full-throated song every 30 minutes or so. Every once in a while I double check just to make sure we didn’t accidentally end up with a baby Warbler in the tub. She sounds kinda like these clips–but LOUD. Mr. Fix-It thinks it’s a rooster, but I think 6 days old is a little early to tell. They’re supposed to be all girls. Besides, I’ve been calling her Aretha–that’s not going to translate well if it’s a boy.
You can see that they are already growing–and the yellow meat chickens are growing faster than the dark-colored layers. And you can see that they are losing their fluff and getting baby wing-tips already. That’s a good way to judge the age on young chicks if you’re buying from a store like Tractor Supply…how much have they feathered out. These little guys are only a week old and you can see how much they’ve changed.
They’ll be moving out to the garage this weekend and into the bigger brooder house soon. I can see our two chicks that are week older are already thinking about trying to fly.

We’re working on lining up our summer daycare and sketching out some summer learning plans. We’ve also got a garden to weed, lettuce to plant, and more compost to move.
