Mod-Podge and Davy Crockett
So, what does motherhood mean?
Motherhood means going out in the yard in your slippers to rescue a rotting cow horn from the dog’s mouth to help your son become Davy Crockett.
What’s the strangest thing you’ve ever had to Mod-Podge together at the last moment? This ranks right up there for me. The Cowboy watched Davy Crockett as part of his character research for his American Heritage Speech at school and got fixated on the powder horn. (Probably because I had already produced fringed pants, a coonskin cap, and a rifle. Mr. Fix-It always warns me about setting the bar too high for these things…)
Well, authentic Colonial-era black powder rifle horn in one night here we come. (It does occasionally occur to me that I shouldn’t procrastinate on these things quite so long, but I digress.)
We had a cow horn in the yard from a recently “harvested” bull calf that the dog had been slobbering over recently so we went out to fetch it and clean it up. I Google-ed cleaning horns but didn’t find much that was in the ballpark of the find-it-in-my-kitchen-tonight limitations I was working with.
So I just washed all the spiders down the drain (wow, that was yucky!) and soaked it in warm dish soap water for a few hours. It was dried out and splintering and softening from the warm water, but it was clean. Mr. Fix-It and I conferred and we decided to just slap a couple thick layers of Mod-Podge on it and call it a day. Once the 4 layers dried, it actually turned out really good! It’s hard and solid (although we’re still treating it gently) and looks like the real thing!
Mr. Fix-It finished it off with a broken leather shoe lace and we looped it on his belt. Turned out pretty well, I must say!
I modified a McCall 2851 pattern for his costume and it really did go together super easy. The process for putting the pants together was different than I was use to but I went on faith and stuck with the directions. I’m glad I did, because they worked out great and I learned something new.
Of course, Mr. Fix-It immediately pointed out the brand new Vision Forum catalog to me and it turns out you can get all the pieces, including power horn, rifle, hatchet, fringe bag, and more from the boys’ adventure costume collection from Vision Forum as well. And I bet theirs don’t smell as bad or come with spiders you have to soak out! {Use code 100SHIPSFREE to get free shipping on your order over $100 before Dec 14th. Just before getting ready to schedule this post, we found out that the Cowboy won the speech competition in his age group. Yea!! The Ladybug (I’ll post about her costume tomorrow!) also did a super job and brought home an A as well! We celebrated with a mid-week Taco Night!
Have you worked on any sewing projects lately? Do you sew costumes for your kiddos? My mom used to make our Halloween costumes every year. We don’t celebrate Halloween any more, but I still find myself making costumes! {grin}
Wow – great job!! The spiders would have put me off…but then I’m a little whimpy that way 🙂 I haven’t sewn costumes {yet} since my girls have a plethora of dressups from my MIL 🙂
